Welcome to another installment of the put on. Where we give artist the credit they deserve for making good music. This month we have our sights set on a young talented artist that the hails from the great city of New York. This Harlem native set her mark on the game a couple years ago and since then has garnished a remarkable following. Melii is known for her versatility and her ability to actually spit some bars. Seeing an artist that can actually go bar for bar in 2019 is something you seldom see. Yes, we have Nipsey Hussle, Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, and so on a so forth — but there’s a lot of artists not going bar for bar in 2019. Yet again music is not all about lyrics, but finding an artist who has personality, beats, and lyrics is a plus. You can correlate this analogy to a Amazon or Walmart bundle deal. Anyways, Melii is an upcoming artist that has personality and good music. The Harlem native made her debut with a reiteration of the Cardi B’s smash summer hit “Bodak Yellow”. Melii’s version of Bodak Yellow created a buzz for her as she intertwined between singing, rapping, and rapping is Spanish (which I find amazing). She released other songs in 2017 such as “Balling” and “No Simple Chick” — both which come off to me as some hard hitting tracks. Once I heard both, I was yearning for a full body project (which we will hopefully see in 2019). Melii has released at least 8 songs all which range from hype tracks to ballads where Melii is crooning about a certain someone she once cared for. Melii has also caught the attention of rap heavy weights — A-Boogie and Meek Mill. Meek featured Melii on his fourth LP “Championships” with “WTS” which I thought both Meek Mill and Melii bodied. Once Melii was featured on Meek's album she garnished attention from the mainstream world. Recently she also featured with Bronx native A-Boogie which puts her and New York on the map even more.
Even though Melii does not have a full body project out yet, I would show recognition to some of the songs she has released.
1. SEE ME
In my opinion I highly believe that “See Me” is one of Melii’s best songs. I enjoy the fact that she can sing and rap — but what differentiates her craft is she doesn’t use autotune (Or enough autotune that is noticeable). Some times autotune takes away from the craft and becomes redundant and repetitive. In this cut Melii is crooning about a guy that she is falling for, but he seems to feel indifferent about their situation-ship. I’ve enjoyed this song time and time again not only because “it’s vibes”, but it reminds of PND’s “Come and See Me”. (Another artist I use to binge listen to in the past). “See Me” reminds me of “Come and See Me” off of P3 because of the beat, Melii’s cadence, and of course the title. It seems as if a certain artist was a PND fan. Once again this is one of her greatest cuts to date.
2. NO SIMPLE CHICK
Another favorite Melii’s is one of her earlier cuts from 2017. The song is simply titled “No Simple Chick”. The beat is very eerie and dark. It sounds like something out of a Halloween movie, in my opinion. This one looms over the concepts of Melii being a Simple Chick who doesn’t ask for too when it comes to the finer things in life. To me the hook is infectious:
“Come along you’ll see, you’ll be cuffed up feeling free”
I really vibe with the change of instrumentation for the last hook. I think variation is certainly a change that is needed in songs — not necessarily this song, but it’s a plus.
3. SH*T TALK
The last song that I usually have on repeat is Sh*t Talk. This is not your typical braggadocios track. Melii is really talking sh*t to her haters. This song is sending a message to all the haters who believe she’s a wack rapper, but she proves then wrong on this track. The song is straight up bars.
During the middle of the song which pretty much serves as the hook — one of Melii’s hater talks about how she is a wack rapper and how he doesn’t know where she’s from. Now this is some typical hater talk. Haters typically use this rhetoric because they’re jealous of the position that you’re in.
Anyways, some notable bars are listed below:
“They wanna hate but then ask for a pic
And I swear it be making me sick
My kids they be all in your mouth lemme know when they out”
When I heard the lines above, I was just thinking to myself like, “yeah she’s on a mission”.
“Throwing Subs on the gram
Broke B*tch understand
You can really catch these hands”
Off the rip these lines let you know that Melii has personality, especially when you add her voice to the lines. This song makes you want to pay the haters no attention (as you should). Watching the visuals makes the song even better because it displays her fierceness and everything else that comes with her personality.
Make sure to check out Melii on Youtube or on a streaming service, she is very interesting to listen to. Add her onto your list of artists to look out for for a debut project this year, she has the lyrics, and the personality to make it far in the music industry.
Until the next installment…
